Lions of the Light
Maasai Mara, 2022
One day in the Maasai Mara, having not seen lions for a couple of days, I came across a few members of the River Pride that had separated from the rest. The River Pride is one of the famous prides of the greater Mara ecosystem.
They were up on Paradise Plains and looking like they wanted to hunt a nearby zebra, but became distracted by some mongoose burrows nearby.
During this time, some darker clouds had been forming and, fortunately, the light beams broke through. Every wildlife photographers dream!
The lions began embracing each other, as they often do when content. The final piece of the puzzle slotted into place as the lions were showered by beams of light from the sky - the scene was set for the shot.
The wild is completely unpredictable but, sometimes, as a photographer, things just go your way.
Lions of the Light received ‘Honourable Mention’ at the 2023 MonoVisions photography awards in the Wildlife category.
